Month of the Water Tiger

Happy New Year!  Friday, February 3 is the first day of the month of the Water Tiger and the first official day of the Fire Rooster Year.

Unfortunately Punxsutawney Phil, the rodent weather prognosticator, saw his shadow indicating 6 more weeks of winter. However, since the Tiger month is the first month of spring in the Chinese calendar I am going to ignore Phil’s prediction and start looking for signs of spring.

The Monkey year certainly went out with a bang and the whole world seems to be on edge at the moment. The Tiger month may seem to be a little quieter with the Yang Water of this month in a ‘heavenly combination’ with the Yin Fire of the year but don’t expect a totally smooth month.  Tigers eat Roosters for dinner and can have a predator/prey relationship, so don’t be fooled by outward signs of calm as there could be trouble brewing beneath. Any troubles held below the surface this month are likely to explode in March during the Rabbit month which clashes the year.  This tiger month may just be the calm before the next storm.

We have two new hexagrams this month, one for the new year and one for this month.

Well suited to this Peach Blossom year, the hexagram for the year is #31 Mutual Influence, which is about relationships both the romantic and platonic kind. It reminds us that the best relationships are forged when feelings, respect and actions are mutual, and where there is a balance between giving and taking – a two way street. It reminds us to do unto others as you would have done to you. For those with a more cynical nature it can also mean if you scratch my back I’ll scratch yours. However, Confucius’ commentary on this hexagram says ‘the superior person opens his heart and mind to accept people without prejudice‘, let us hope that our superior natures win out this year.

The hexagram for this month is #13 Seeking Harmony, which is also about relationships and bringing people together.  Seeking Harmony is about finding common ground and setting differences aside in order to move forward and make progress.  Considering the enormous political divide in the United States, which seems to be spilling over into the rest of the world, this hexagram is very timely. This month, try to set differences aside and find a way to embrace the people in your life that you may disagree with. Real and lasting progress can only be made when we extend the olive branch and come together, hard as that may sometimes be.  Seek Harmony, seek understanding, seek peace.

This month also brings new monthly energy to each of the 9 sectors and here are the highlights.

Southwest: This year the #7 or Robbery Star is in the Southwest and this month it is also host to the negative #5 Yellow star. It is best to keep this area of the house quiet and use as little as possible this month, if you have a main door here use another entrance if you can.

EastThe East has the #8 wealth star for the year and this month the auspicious #6 star is visiting creating a lucky 6-8 combination. If you want a boost for your career and earnings then tap into this winning combination of energy by spending more time in this sector this month .
