Month of the Fire Rabbit – The March Hare

Month of the Fire Rabbit:
March 5 – April 4

The month of March is associated with the rabbit or hare in many cultures, the Chinese included, as a symbol of fertility and spring. Hence the reason this month is called the month of the Rabbit. What most don’t realize, is that the zodiac sign we call Rabbit or Mao 卯 is not really a rabbit but the astrological sign of scorpio called by another name. In fact, the Chinese word the rabbit animal is actually Tùzǐ 兔子 which shows us that animal signs are really a cultural overlay onto astrological information.

The astrological sign Mao is associated with Rabbit because they share similar qualities of fecundity and procreative energy. This month which marks the mid-point of the spring season is a time of re-birth, prolific growth – life springing forth with greater vigor than the nascent wood energy of the Tiger month. Wood is the element of growth, expansion and education which is essentially an expansion of the mind making this an excellent time to create, expand horizons literally or figuratively, and to learn new things.

This is also the month of the Spring Equinox when a balance between daylight and darkness is achieved. This increase in solar energy is physically invigorating not only in nature but also in humans. You may find the longer days giving you more drive, stamina and passion. Use this fuel to become more balanced, more physically active, more inspired, and more proactive with your plans for the year.

True to the nature of both Rabbits and the astrological sign of Scorpio is the sexual energy infused into all things this month. The Rabbit is one of the four ‘Peach Blossom’ zodiac signs which brings powerful energy of attraction and charisma. Of the five Rabbit Pillars this month’s Fire Rabbit is particularly good at attracting attention like a moth to a flame. In fact one of the images of this pillar is a seductive red candle. Now of course this Peach Blossom energy can be used for romantic endeavors but it can also facilitate networking and connections of all kinds. This will be especially true and helpful for those who have a Tiger, Horse or Dog in their day pillar. If this is you, make sure to get out to see and be seen, or focus on marketing and branding as well.

The I Ching hexagram of this month #41 called Decreasing. This hexagram uses the image of a lake giving its excess moisture to the dry mountain above to poetically illustrate how balance may be achieved. The advice of this hexagram is to decrease what is in excess in order to give more energy to that which is deficient. We all have aspects of our lives that tend to receive more than their fair share of our energy. Most often it is work which leaves insufficient energy for the more nourishing aspects of our lives. As the year is still young this is an ideal time to pause and take stock of which parts of your life would benefit from a decrease in energy to allow more time and space for the parts of you that fall neglected to the bottom of the pile. Take this month to reprioritize your life and see how you might navigate the remainder of the year in a more balanced way.

On a personal note, I will be following the advice of the decreasing hexagram quite literally by taking a sabbatical for month of March. I will be decreasing my usual work load to focus on writing and other creative projects. Most importantly, I will also be using this time for deep rest, heart mending, and to nourish my spirit and soul. Unless the magic of Scotland sends me traveling through the stone circles, or I disappear in Brigadoon, I expect to resume my usual consulting and teaching schedule in early April and look forward to connecting with you then.
