The Goat month begins on Saturday and marks the end of the summer season according to the solar calendar. We have just passed the summer solstice and have entered the Yin half of the year where the days begin to grow shorter; Yang energy is now waning and Yin energy is Rising. We still have one more month of strong yang energy before autumn begins, so use it well.
This month’s I Ching hexagram is #46 called Rising or Growing Upward. The imagery of this hexagram is Earth over Wood. It is the image of a plant breaking free from the soil to reach for the sun and sky. In yoga we say ‘Root to Rise’ which is to say that in order to rise up tall and strong we must first be well grounded and on stable footing. However, you can’t get into tree pose just by being grounded, effort and action are required.
This hexagram recognizes that a rooted foundation, represented by the earth trigram, is vital but the emphasis here is on growth and forward momentum. Once you have a foundation it’s time to take action, to put forth effort, and to reach for your goals and dreams.
This is not a time to remain small or hidden. Perhaps you have fallen and need to dust yourself off and rise again. Perhaps you have been studying or training but have been afraid share your talents and knowledge with the world. Even if you are well on your path, this hexagram encourages you to continue to reach higher and grow beyond the limits you perceive. Like the limbs of a mighty tree keep reaching higher – keep growing.
