August: Month of the Water Monkey

Month of the Water Monkey:
August 8 – September 7

The Water Monkey will arrive on Thursday, August 8.  This month’s Yang Water Neptunian influence is embodied elementally by the Ocean, and the Monkey’s Geminian intellect is embodied by the advancement of civilization and technology. In the Water Monkey pillar we find an image of an ancient civilization now under water, forgotten in the depths. The works of humans lost to time and the ravages of a changing environment, how prescient as we grapple with the effects of climate change upon on our own cities in this technological age.

Water in the Chinese system is representative of both thoughts as well as emotions. Taken as a metaphor for ourselves Yang Water can represent our own emotional depths and the subconscious mind. The vestiges of our own past that we would rather let sink to the ocean floor like the Titanic than to grapple with them. This pillar poses the question, can we look deeply into our own past to heal and learn from it or would we prefer to skim across the surface of the water ignoring what lies beneath?

Adding to what is already an emotionally laden month are greater changes and challenges in the world at large which may indeed rock the boat both in the circumstances around us as well as the emotions within us.

The cause of this storm is the clashing energy between the pillars in the birth chart of this year. The month pillar of the Fire Tiger clashes with the hour pillar of Metal Monkey within the chart. This means that the month when this clash will play out in our reality is the Monkey month, from early August into the beginning of September. The this clash could bring significant events in financial markets, politics, and global conflicts as well. This month emotional self-care will be important. It will also behoove us to be more patient and careful with others as emotions may be out of balance or overwhelming for many especially when they are exacerbated by challenging events in the world at large.

The I Ching hexagram of this month is #64 called Not Yet Accomplished This hexagram in the final hexagram of the I Ching. When all has been said and done it is time to look to a new horizon and chart a course forward in a new direction and this hexagram heralds a fresh start. The images of the opposing elements of Fire and Water are used here to represent the forces of Yin and Yang and the challenging task of brining together into harmony two opposing forces which are moving in opposition to one another. While this seems like an impossible task, as are most arduous tasks one aspires to accomplish.  This hexagram also serves as a timely metaphor for our increasingly polarized world, how do we bring together those who are in opposition at the start of this new twenty year cycle? Perhaps this year offers a new beginning and also a challenge of harnessing the power of these two life giving and sustaining powers to create something new and beautiful. It is always darkest before the dawn and hopefully this month we can all do our part to create union where there is division and use these complementary energies of this moment to create a new way forward.
