December 7 – January 5
This month’s pillar δΈε Bing Zi or Yang Fire Rat, contains the imagery of the sun shining through clouds or winter sunlight. This pale light is a welcome element in the deep mid-winter, but no match for the extreme cold of the season. Not only is the fire weaker during this month, but the daylight hours are also at their shortest as we approach the point of maximum Yin at the winter solstice.
With fire at its weakest this month, Yin attributes of cold and darkness are the dominant forces and we should go with that flow by being more Yin ourselves. Like hibernating animals, this is a good month to stay in more and get more rest, cut back on activities if possible, and focus on being instead of doing. It’s a great month to carve out time for quiet contemplation and introspection. It is also a good month to reflect on our lives and ask ourselves what is working, what is not, and how do we want to reshape our lives in the coming year.
The hexagram for this month is #27 Nourishing and it encourages us to pay more attention to how we nourish ourselves. Of course in the literal sense this hexagram refers to nourishing in terms of food but it also means that we need to be more aware of how we nourish ourselves body, mind and spirit as well. As we go inward this month we should examine what we are consuming and see if it truly nourishes our minds and spirits. Nourishing doesn’t just apply to food but also to what we watch, listen to, who we spend time with, and how we spend our precious time. Identifying the people and things that truly feed our souls is a great way to start planning what we want for the year of the Rat which is fast approaching!
This Rat month gives us a foretaste of what the coming Rat year may hold in store. Of course how the energy of the Rat affects you will depend on your BaZi or 4 Pillars chart. If the Rat is your personal ‘Peach Blossom’ animal you may find your power of attraction and personal magnetism on the rise. If the Rat is one of your personal Nobleman stars you may find more helpful people and mentors showing up for you and lending a hand. Pay attention to what transpires this month as it may offer some clues about what’s coming to you in the new year.
