Happy New Year 2020, and the last month of the Pig year!
This month’s pillar 丁丑 Ding Chou, or Fire Ox, is like a delicate candle flame in the winter snow. A small spark of light in the darkness. As the fire has just begun to grow at the winter solstice this is a weak and vulnerable candle flame much like Elton John’s song Candle in the Wind.
This is the flame of illumination and hope. A tiny spark which can grow when protected and tended. It’s a good month for inspiration and renewed optimism so try to find your proverbial light in the darkness and see where it can take you.
Fire Ox month is another month of foreshadowing of the Metal Rat year which is nearly upon us. In fact, the day pillar for the chart of the New Year is also Fire Ox and as such informs us about the personality of the year. Fire Ox is sensitive, delicate, and creative. It is also capable of guiding others with its light. You can light another’s candle without diminishing your own flame – how might you do that this year?
The hexagram for this month is #17 called Following. This hexagrams gives us the image of the strong subordinating themselves to the weak. It tells us if we truly want to lead we must first learn to follow, this is servant leadership not lording over leadership. This hexagram reminds us to have humility, to give credit to others, and most importantly to subordinate our personal desires for the good of all. In order to truly inspire and lead others, to be a beacon of light that people will follow, you must first cultivate humility and serve.
