Month of the Earth Snake

Month of the Earth Snake:
May 4 – June 3

After an intense and tumultuous double Dragon month we will be getting a bit of a reprieve with the arrival of the Earth Snake month and with it the start of the summer season. As the summer season is the season of fire this often brings feelings of hope an optimism and during a rocky Dragon year this could be a welcome change. Fire of course is also the element of spirituality which is an important aspect of this year and month.

The Snake Zodiac sign is sometimes referred to in Chinese Metaphysics as the ‘Earthly Door’. The imagery of the Earth Snake in particular is of a portal into the earth such as a cave or tunnel. Like Alice in Wonderland’s proverbial rabbit hole we could choose to enter this earthly domain to bury our heads in the sand, or perhaps more productively to take a journey to discover what lies below the surface.

For millennia, cave have been places of quietude apart from ordinary life where spiritual seekers have taken refuge for taking inner journeys, and to support spiritual cultivation. Snakes are also associated with the initiation of the spiritual quest inviting us to awaken the fire within and to shed the skin of what no longer serves as we continue to grow and heal. This month is an ideal time during this spiritual Wood Dragon year to seek out the places and practices which support continued spiritual growth and development. Find a quiet and supportive place to be vulnerable and shed what confines you and restricts your growth so you focus on what is eternal and true.

The I Ching hexagram of this month #34 Great Strength also gives insight into how we might cultivate and channel personal power. The imagery of this hexagram is over Thunder and Lightning in the Heavens, certainly an image of celestial power and might. Though the ancient textual commentaries explain that true power does not lie in physical strength but from doing what is right. Real courage and strength of character are required to do what is right and seldom is it the easy or popular route. Often what fuels the fortitude to follow the guidance of our convictions is spiritual strength which enables us to do what is sure to meet with disappointment or resistance from others. In the end however, even when wildly unpopular, doing what is right and true always pays off. Is your inner voice strong enough to guide you?  If not, go deeper, shed a bit more and you will have the inner strength needed to become great.

On a personal note, I will be using the energy of the Earthly door to deepen my own spiritual understanding as well as my Feng Shui knowledge while traveling with my teacher and mentor Joey Yap in China and Tibet. I will have limited access to communication while I am away as well as limited availability for sessions, but I do look forward to connecting with you when I return.
